Does Video Gaming Affect How We Sleep?

All of those avid gamers out there know the PlayStation 5 is released this week (finally!), and the Xbox series X was already released earlier this month. No doubt the long anticipation will mean we’re going to want to spend endless hours playing, and whilst this is exactly what a lot of us will do, it’s good to know about the effects this has on our sleep…

Gaming tempts you to stay up later

Especially a problem for night-owl teens who, generally, are wired to want to go to bed later and wake up later. So when they’re playing video games in the evening anyway, the temptation is to put off going to bed and game the night away.

Artificial light decreases sleep hormones

Artificial or blue light is associated with suppressing the release of the melatonin hormone, which is the one that helps you nod off at night. In a way, this delays your whole circadian rhythm, which is our sleep-wake cycle.

What does the science say?

According to findings from two scientific studies, people who play video games for more time and with higher engagement, had the video game content merge into their dreams more frequently. So if you’re playing games with aspects of violence, you could be having some scary dreams!

Increases sleep latency, the time it takes to fall asleep

A number of studies have shown that video gaming increases the time it takes to go to sleep. Whether it’s down to the intensity of the game you’re playing, or the artificial light that’s discussed above, there are numerous reasons that gaming can stop you from nodding off promptly.

Decreased sleep time

Not only does it take longer for you to get to sleep, but studies have also shown that your total sleep time decreases too. If you’re not getting your 8 hours, it can affect your ability to concentrate, consolidate memories and go about your day effectively.

So there you have it!  Have fun gaming away, but to ensure you aren’t totally drained from too much screen time, enjoy it in moderation…
